Mom's Valentine's Day "Marriage" Proves a Point |
[From the
PFLAG-All email list...]
I got
this email last night from one of our prominent and active PFLAG
moms [in Sacramento, CA]. She's also been known as the
Mom of Lavendar Heights in Midtown Sacramento as well as having
served as President of our chapter. I thought what she did was
great and definitely proved a point. Her hope that the Bee, our
local newspaper, picked it up was not to be. There was a large
picture of a number of same sex couples kissing on the steps of
the Placer Co. Courthouse. This was where the clerk was handing
out Certificates of Inequality. There were a lot of
protestors also.
Just thought it was worth passing on.

Subject: Happy Valentine's Day
Date: Wed, 14 Feb 2007
I had an eventful day. I applied for a marriage license.
I went down to the County Clerk's office today at noon to
support the same sex couples who were asking for marriage
license applications and getting turned down because they "did
not qualify".
On a whim, I thought perhaps I could apply with some "male type
person", so I waited until a likely candidate came walking by.
It took me four tries. The first guy thought I was crazy. The
second didn't have time. The third thought it was a stupid idea.
And then came "my intended".
He and a friend of his were "hanging out". They looked about 18,
Hispanic, baggy pants with the crotch down by their knees. I
asked if either one of them was willing to go in and apply for a
marriage license with me. I explained what we were doing. They
thought that was "right on" and "cool". But they were still a
little hesitant. So I told them there was 20 bucks in it for the
one who would apply with me. Bingo!
He wanted to know if he needed an ID, I told him we wouldn't
even get that far. And that as long as we didn't sign anything
or pay our fees, nothing was legal and binding.
So he and I went in together and asked for a marriage license
application. We sat down together and started filling out the
"bride and groom" information. That's when I found out his name
was Frank and he was 18. The contrast was hysterical. He's young
enough to be my grandson. After awhile, we decided we had
"changed our minds". The County Clerk person was very nice. She
knew what we were doing.
The really bizarre thing is that we actually could have gotten
marriage this afternoon! My goodness, marriage certainly is a
sacred institution and clearly must be protected from my son and
those other "degenerates"!
The Bee was there. We'll see if PFLAG made the news in the
morning.
