PFLAG
Phoenix
is Moving to . . . Phoenix!
The
PFLAG Phoenix Board of Directors is excited to announce that
our central
Phoenix meeting will be changing locations. The
"central Phoenix" PFLAG meeting, which has met at the Palo
Christi Presbyterian Church in Paradise Valley for the past
decade, will be moving effective January 19th
2009.
The new location of the meeting, only 10 short miles from
our Paradise Valley site, will be
First
Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC) located at
1407 N. 2nd St., just ½ block south of McDowell
on 2nd Street. The meetings will continue to be
held on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. The only
exception will be in April of 2009 when another date will
have to be arranged.
There are several reasons for the move including: the desire
for a meeting location that is more centrally located in the
Valley, having a meeting facility that is near public
transportation including bus service and the new light rail
system, being in a location closer to where the Phoenix
GLBT community is centralized, and reducing the cost of our
rental space for the meetings.
First Congregational
UCC is an accepting and welcoming congregation to the GLBT
community, and one of their members approached us with the
idea of holding a PFLAG meeting at their church. After
talking with Reverend Dr. Stephen E. Wayles, the Pastor of
First Congregational, he was enthusiastic about a PFLAG
meeting being held at their church and brought the matter up
before the church’s Community Outreach Committee. The
committee was also enthusiastic about a PFLAG meeting at
First
Congregational
and extended an invitation to us to meet there.
The PFLAG Phoenix Board of Directors arranged an evening
meeting at
First
Congregational
to look at the church facilities and grounds. At the
September Board of Directors meeting a vote was taken and it
was unanimous to move the central Phoenix PFLAG meeting from
Palo Christi to
First
Congregational
effective January of 2009.
We
are extremely excited about
First
Congregational
UCC being our future meeting location, not only because of
the reasons stated above but because of the potential we see
for the growth of PFLAG Phoenix at this new location. With
many members of the GLBT community and their families
attending
First
Congregational
UCC, we see tremendous potential for involving more people
in our support, education and advocacy programs.
Sincerely,
Dave Pape
Chapter Leadership Changes for
2009: New Chapter Leaders Being Sought
The PFLAG Phoenix Board of Directors will most likely be
postponing the election of officers for calendar year 2009.
The election, normally held in December of each year, will
take place after we move our central PFLAG meeting to the
First Congregational United Church of Christ on January 19,
2009. We would like members of First Congregational UCC to
take ownership and leadership in the central Phoenix PFLAG
group that will be meeting at their church. In order to
provide this opportunity, our election of officers will take
place in January or February of 2009.
If
any of you receiving this email are interested in serving
PFLAG Phoenix, we will be electing a new president, vice
president and secretary for 2009. We also need a Program
Coordinator who arranges the programs for our central
Phoenix meetings. There is a complete list of all the
volunteer
positions available on the PFLAG Phoenix website if you
are interested in seeing what volunteer needs we have.
